Help for those living in the woods…
Have you ever been camping? Many of us enjoy the experience–so long as we can have comforts like hot-and-cold running water for showers, access to clean bathrooms and maybe a campground general store filled with beverages and snacks. Even then, few of us ever spend more than a few days in a tent and couldn’t imagine living under those conditions day in and day out, especially in cold weather.
And yet this way of life is a reality for the many people who shelter in tents all over the Atlanta area, including in Cobb County. You might not see them because they deliberately pitch camp in wooded places that are out of view from the road. But most likely, when you drive up a ramp to I-75, someone is living close by. The circumstances in which these folks live can vary tremendously: Some work regular jobs and have spent years cultivating clean, safe camps replete with the likes of gas-powered generators and grills, working lamps and TV sets, patio furniture and other comforts reminiscent of a North Georgia campground. But a great many others have next to nothing–maybe a tent, sleeping bag and a few other possessions–and face all kinds of uncertainties and challenges.
Through our Simply Sheltered program, SNGA helps make their lives more comfortable by providing tents, sleeping bags, blankets, pillows and other essential items in collaboration with Acworth, Ga.-based Give Homeless Hope. (NOTE: We focus on recipients living in Cobb County.) In the winter, we work to provide long underwear, hats, gloves, scarves and other items that can keep people warm. Candles, in particular, are one thing people experiencing homelessness need the most. They use them to see at night and to keep rodents away from their tents. I’ll bet you have some candles in your house gathering dust! Please consider donating to our cause. Do you like to do after-Christmas shopping? Candles are often on sale at a great price! The best kind are pillar and tapered.
If you would like to donate to these efforts, checks can be sent to Simple Needs GA, Inc., P.O. Box 670265, Marietta, GA 30066. Just make a note that your donation is for our Simple Sheltered program!
